Week 10: MEASUREMENT & INDICATORS FOR SDGs
Date: 14 May 2025
Course: SCSH1201-Sustainable Development: Issues, Principles and Practices
Section: 4
This week, I learned how important measurement tools like indices and indicators are in assessing progress toward sustainable development goals (SDGs). I used to think sustainability was only about environmental protection, but now I understand it's broader and must be measured systematically across social, economic, and environmental areas.
Learning about various indices such as the Human Development Index, Ecological Footprint, and Happy Planet Index opened my eyes to how countries and organizations can evaluate well-being and not just economic growth. I was especially interested in the Malaysian Shariah Index, as it reflects how sustainability can also be measured using religious and ethical values like Maqasid Shariah.
The explanation of the four types of indicators which are the context, input, process, and impact that helped me see how every stage of a project or policy can be tracked and improved. For example, understanding that “impact” indicators measure strategic goals (such as better public health) made me realize the importance of long-term outcomes, not just immediate actions.
Going forward, I will apply these concepts to analyze how my own project (like the laundry basket initiative or any other sustainable project) contributes to SDG indicators, such as improving community well-being, reducing waste, or promoting responsible consumption.

Very well written. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteIt’s true that understanding sustainability requires more than just caring for the environment but it involves measuring progress in social and economic dimensions too.
