WEEK 9: FIELD WORKS - ON CAMPUS OBSERVATIONS
Date: 6 May 2025
Course: SCSH1201-Sustainable Development: Issues, Principles and Practices
Section: 4
Studying Sustainable Development at IIUM has been an enriching experience, allowing me to grasp the profound impact that students can have in fostering a sustainable campus. Through fieldwork and on-campus observation, I have gained deeper insights into IIUM’s commitment to sustainability, from initiatives such as food waste composting and energy conservation to broader environmental programs. This journey has reinforced my understanding that sustainability is not solely an institutional responsibility, it also requires dedicated individuals to drive meaningful change.
Campus sustainability, as explored in our discussions, extends beyond environmental aspects to include economic and social dimensions. Efforts such as waste management, groundwater conservation, and solar energy utilization reflect IIUM’s determination to reduce its ecological footprint. At the same time, initiatives promoting social sustainability, including food banks, mental health programs, and animal shelters, highlight the importance of care and inclusivity within the campus community. These principles closely align with Islamic teachings, particularly khalifah (stewardship) and ihsan (excellence), reminding me that sustainability is not just a global concern but it is also a moral duty.
Engaging in fieldwork and reflective exercises has prompted me to critically examine the challenges IIUM faces in advancing its sustainability goals. While the university has made commendable progress, there is still a need to enhance student involvement and cultivate a culture of shared responsibility. As an IIUM student, I realize that sustainability is not only about institutional policies but also about personal actions and ethical leadership. This subject has inspired me to take an active role beyond academic discussions whether through small daily habits, participation in sustainable initiatives, or advocating for greener policies within the university.
Looking ahead, I hope to apply the knowledge gained from my studies to real-world sustainability efforts, transforming theory into action. This reflection has reinforced my belief that sustainability is not a distant goal but an ongoing journey of learning, adapting, and making thoughtful choices to create a more equitable, balanced, and environmentally responsible society. My education at IIUM has provided me with the tools and motivation to pursue sustainability not just as an academic discipline but as a personal and collective responsibility.

It’s great to see how your studies inspire real action for a better future.
