WEEK 7: CHALLENGES TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOMENT
Date: 22 April 2025
Course: SCSH1201-Sustainable Development: Issues, Principles and Practices
Section: 4
As an IIUM student studying Sustainable Development, this course has profoundly expanded my understanding of the interconnected challenges facing our world. Learning about the three pillars which are environmental, social, and economic highlighted how imbalances in one area can destabilize the others.
The discussions on inequalities in access to education, healthcare, clean water, and food were particularly eye-opening, as they revealed the systemic injustices that perpetuate unsustainability. The stark comparison between global poverty and resource allocation, such as the disparity between an African’s daily income and a European cow’s subsidy, underscored the urgency of equitable solutions.
The Islamic perspective on sustainable development resonated deeply with me, emphasizing stewardship (Khalifah), justice (Zakat), and ecological balance (Mizan). It reinforced the idea that sustainability is not just a modern goal but a moral imperative rooted in faith. Group projects and case studies, like Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness Index, challenged me to think critically about alternative measures of progress beyond GDP.
Moving forward, I aim to apply these principles in my daily life by reducing waste, advocating for equity, and supporting sustainable initiatives, while encouraging others to do the same. This course has not only equipped me with knowledge but also inspired me to become a proactive agent of change for a more just and sustainable future.

This is a thoughtful and well-rounded reflection. Thanks!
